Fraser: How NHL officials are held accountable

In his latest C’mon Ref over at TSN, retired NHL referee Kerry Fraser talks about accountability: The discipline that an official might receive is almost always done in-house and not held out as a public example for ridicule. Officials are fined for any misinterpretation of the playing rules. The fine goes to the charity of their choice. Conduct unbecoming of an official can also be met with some form of discipline. I say that discipline is “almost always in-house” because last year we saw referee Tim Peel suspended for one regular-season game after an unauthorized interview and pictures were...

Oilers’ Yakupov Injured During Collision With Linesman

Early in the second period of a tied hockey game, Edmonton winger Nail Yakupov was looking for a goal. He also may have been looking to avoid a hit from one of the Carolina Hurricanes’ players.  He wasn’t expecting to have to look out for linesman Matt MacPherson. The two got tangled up after a faceoff at center ice.  MacPherson’s foot appeared to get caught up in Jeff Skinner’s stick, sending the linesman sprawling. On his way down, he unfortunately reached out and took Yakupov with him. Yakupov did not return to the...

Officially Speaking: Without All Due Respect

By Mark Lichtenfeld.  Originally published at LetsPlayHockey.com: As regular OS readers know, most of this column’s inquiries are sent by fellow Level 3 veterans, pleading with me to expose what they consider to be a lack of respect toward seasoned refs emanating from local officiating associations. Now, being a 25-year veteran myself, I empathize with these guys. I have felt their pain. Not any more, mind you, since I relocated and work predominately for another association which treats veterans like universities treat professors emeritus. With respect. But I digress. Let us commence today’s column by scrutinizing the USA Hockey...
