Congrats to our First Call: Stadium Series Winner!

Congratulations to Rhodes Dolan, whose guess for the first penalty in the Stadium Series game between the Los Angeles Kings and the San Jose Sharks was the closest. San Jose Sharks defenseman Brendan Dillon was the first to head to the penalty box. He was called for holding at 6:33 of the first period. Rhodes wins a REFcore prize pack that includes a t-shirt and a riot pad. Some notes from the entries: Calls: Hooking was the most common guess (39%), followed by tripping (21%).  Holding, the actual penalty, ranked fifth, behind also hooking, tripping, roughing (8%), and interference (7%)....

Coyotes Frustrated After Missed Call Leads to Game-Tying Goal

The Arizona Coyotes let their two goal lead slip away on Thursday night, ultimately watching the New York Rangers claw back for a 4-3 victory. Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett pointed to a missed call late in the second period as the pivotal moment in the game. Rangers forward Derick Brassard attempted to play the puck along the boards in the Arizona zone.  He got his stick up, catching Coyotes defenseman Andrew Campbell in the mouth.  Campbell went to the bench for repairs, obviously bleeding. There was no penalty called on the play. If one of the linesmen had seen Brassard’s...

With the puck under the left pad of Blues goaltender Brian Elliott, Winnipeg Jets forward Drew Stafford continued to whack away at the puck.  Referee Graham Skilliter, in his first full season as an NHL referee, blew the whistle and offered Stafford some advice: “You’re not going to score a goal that way!”   (Stick-tap to Olityo over at /r/hockey for the...

Linesman Steve Miller Injured on Faceoff

We’ve talked before about how tough NHL officials are. Last night, linesmen Steve Miller did his part to remind us just how much they can endure. Miller, a 15-year NHL veteran, dropped the puck for a faceoff between Ducks center Rickard Rakell and David Legwand of the Ottawa Senators. As the players battled for the puck, the butt-end of Legwand’s stick clipped Miller in the visor, violently snapping his head to the side. Miller skated to the boards before dropping to the ice. He was assisted to the locker room by the medical staff. Referees Dan O’Halloran and Eric...

Eric Lindros Suing Ref Paul Stewart for Defamation

Eric Lindros really likes dictating where he goes and what gets said about him. He’s filed a $3 million – make that $250,000 – lawsuit against former NHL referee Paul Stewart for what he claims were defamatory comments.  The charges stem from an article published last summer in which Stewart talked about his relationship with Lindros – or lack thereof – both on and off the ice. View image | gettyimages.com   From Stewart’s column that prompted the suit: The start of the game [between the Flyers and Devils] at the Spectrum was delayed several minutes. I had to wait for...
