Canucks’ Burrows Suspended 3 Games For Hit on Habs’ Emelin

UPDATE: Burrows has been suspended three games for the hit. After a quiet start to the season, business is picking up for the Department of Player Safety. Vancouver Canucks forward Alex Burrows is the latest to toss his hat into the head-shot suspension ring. (Not to be confused with Thomas Vanek’s paycheck-gambing ring.) In Thursday night’s game against Montreal, Burrows leveled Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin with a high hit that could see the Canucks winger on the receiving end of some supplemental discipline. Emelin had just released a pass that was intercepted by Canucks winger Derek Dorsett.  With the Habs blueliner...

Wings Lose Goal to Phantom Interference Call

The Detroit Red Wings were haunted by a phantom interference call that cost them a goal in Wednesday night’s game against the Washington Capitals. It may as well have been a ghost that tripped up Capitals netminder Braden Holtby, since it sure wasn’t Red Wings forward Luke Glendening.  Of course, that’s not how it was called on the ice. Holtby played the puck up the boards, then tripped over his own skates on the way back to the crease.  The Wings recovered the puck. An opportunistic Drew Miller fired the puck at the nearly-empty net to give the Wings...

New York Rangers defenseman John Moore has been suspended five games for an illegal check to the head of Minnesota Wild forward Erik Haula. The incident took place at 7:12 of the second period in Monday night’s game between the Rangers and Wild at Madison Square Garden. Moore was given a match penalty for intent to injure. Haula did not return to the game. From the NHL rulebook, an illegal hit to the head (Rule 48) is defined as “a hit resulting in contact with an opponent’s head where the head was the main point of contact and such...

Sens Chris Neil Gets Jared Boll with the Ol’ Eye Gouge

Like any good brawler, Chris Neil has his ‘go-to’ moves.  Some guys like to use the chinstrap to twist the helmet.  Others pull down at the collar for leverage.   Neil appaeared to debut a new finishing move Wednesday night in a fight against the Columbus Blue Jackets’ Jared Boll: the eye gouge. Both Boll and Neil were given five-minute fighting majors.  Neil was also given an additional two minutes for ‘unsportsmanlike conduct’ for the eye gouge. So why didn’t Neil get more than two minutes?     It seems all parties agreed that it was unintentional. Watch Neil apologize...

You Make The Call: Was Flyers Game-Winner a Good Goal?

Flyers forward Brayden Schenn sped in on a breakway  into overtime. Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick made the initial stop. Schenn pulled up at the top of the crease, while Quick and the puck continued over the goal line. Referee Trevor Hanson, positioned behind the net, immediately waved off the potential game-winning goal. The officials conferred at center ice. In the discussion were veteran referee Dan O’Halloran and linesmen Derek Amell and Tim Nowak – all with 1,000-plus games under their belts as NHL officials.   After discussion, they determined it was a good goal.  Hanson confirmed with the Situation Room...

Another Bruins game, another referee injury. Referee Dave Lewis was hit in the face by a puck and suffered a broken jaw during the first period of Tuesday night’s game between the Bruins and Minnesota Wild.  The 31-year-old official was standing along the boards when Minnesota defenseman Justin Falk’s clearing attempt caught Lewis in the face. Lewis went to the Bruins’ bench for medical attention; the trainer immediately ushered him off the ice for repairs.  Lewis suffered a fractured jaw and broken teeth. He’s slated to head to the oral surgeon upon his return to Toronto. Lewis was unable to return...
