Ref’s Eye View: University of Alabama – Huntsville

The latest Ref’s Eye View look at a hockey game comes to us from the Univeristy of Alabama – Huntsville, from their game against the Alaska Nanooks Pretty cool, eh? As far as the team goes, they’re pretty amazing as well.  Not so much for their one ice play (this season they’re  1-32-1), but for the fact that they play.   It’s a lot of work to keep up when you’re trying to run an ice hockey team out of Alabama.   Mike Tierney over at the New York Times did an incredible writeup of what it’s like to...

Post-Olympic Officiating Off to Bumpy Start for Bruins, Habs

Two days in to the post-Olympic push, and the referees are already in the hot seat.  While many of the players are shaking off rust from their time off, the majority of referees and linesmen are doing the same.   As we get back up to speed, there will be some challenging moments – both for players and officials. Causeway Crowd’s Andrew Thompson took referees Brian Pochmara and Francois St. Laurent to task for their performance in the Bruins’ 5-4 overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres. To be outright honest with everyone, I’m a little surprised the third star of...

Forsberg: Gold Medal Game Ref Selection is “a ******* Joke”

The officials are set for Sunday’s Olympic Gold Medal game between Canada and Sweden.  Working the game will be referees Brad Meier (USA) and Kelly Sutherland (CAN) alongside linesmen Derek Amell (CAN) and Greg Devorski (CAN). All are NHL officials.  Three are Canadian.  The  lone non-Canadian currently lives in Calgary. Former NHLer and Team Sweden forward Peter Forsberg is not happy about that. Forsberg called the assignment of the officials for the Olympic Gold Medal Game “a ******* joke” in speaking to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. He went on to say, “Canadian officials in the finals, also the supervisor plus reserves....

Syracuse’s Boeheim Argues Call, Gets Ejected

Sorry, ref, coach Jim Boeheim disagrees…  and he’s going to let you know it. With Syracuse down by two with 10.4 seconds left, what looked like a defensive foul was called as a charge on the Orange.  Boeheim exploded, storming the court: Yeah, you can’t do that.  Boeheim was hit with two technicals. Duke went on to win 66-60. At least he had a little fun in the...

USA/Canada Women’s Gold Medal Game Ends in Officiating Debacle

The USA vs. Canada Gold Medal game for women’s ice hockey in the 2014 Sochi Olympics was referee Joy Johnston (nee Tottman)’s first championship game.   It might also be her last. First off, I’m not blaming the referee for the Team USA loss.  The Americans had a 2-0 lead with less than four minutes to play and needed to shut the door.  Even without interference from the linesman that nearly led to an empty net goal, they should have won. They didn’t.  Unfortunately, the loss is on them. That doesn’t excuse referee Joy Tottman for what happened in...
