Situation Room: Winter Classic

  The Winter Classic saw two plays that required review from just over the border at the War Room in Toronto.  From the NHL: Second Period: Alfredsson’s Skate At 13:14 of the second period in the Maple Leafs/Red Wings game, video review supported the referee’s call on the ice that the puck deflected off of Detroit forward Daniel Alfredsson’s skate and into the net in a legal fashion. According to Rule 49.2 “A puck that deflects into the net off an attacking player’s skate who does not use a distinct kicking motion is a legitimate goal.” Good goal, Detroit. That one opened...

Lupul to Face Suspension for Winter Classic Crosscheck?

On Tuesday, Brendan Shanahan took part in the Alumni Game at the Big House. On Wednesday, Joffrey Lupul suited up for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Winter Classic. On Thursday, Lupul should expect to get a call from Shanahan for what happened the previous day. Midway through the first period, with the game scoreless, Lupul retaliated for a hit by the Wings’ Jakub Kindl.  Unfortunately, the Toronto winger went after the wrong guy.  He crosschecked Eaves in the neck, sending him down to the ice where he remained for some time before being helped off. Referee Ian Walsh Injured

Referee Ian Walsh  took a nasty spill behind the Vancouver Canucks’ net while officiating their game against the Winnipeg Jets. Walsh got caught up with Vancouver’s Dale Weise as he battled with the Jets’ Jacob Trouba behind the net.  As Weise and Walsh fell to the ice, Weise’s skate appeared to hit Walsh in the back.
