Avs McLeod Faces In-Person Hearing for Hit

Another scary hit, another likely suspension… At 2:13 of the first period of Thursday’s game between the Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings, Avs winger Cody McLeod was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for boarding Detroit’s Niklas Kronwall. Kronwall’s helmet was knocked off in the collision.  He lay motionless on the ice before being removed from the ice on a stretcher. Kronwall did not return. Kronwall has a concussion; cuts to the ear but he's moving all extremities, being treating in locker room. #WinForNik — Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) October 18, 2013 Detroit went on to win...

Referee Puts Player in Chokehold

For anyone who’s ever joked about going to a hockey game and having a boxing match break out… the game has evolved. Fans at a game between the Växjö Lakers and Färjestad BK of the Swedish Elite League were treated to some MMA action on October 17. Attempting to break up a post-whistle scrum, the referee successfully completed a takedown before executing a perfect guillotine choke on one of the Farjestad’s Marius Holtet. The best part?  Watch Holtet tap out: Holtet was drafted by the Dallas Stars 42nd overall in 2002, making him the highest-drafted Norwegian ever.  He spent fours season in...

Brouwer Headshot on Callahan: No Discipline

In Wednesday night’s ‘Rivalry Night’ matchup on NBC Sports Network, Troy Brouwer made a dangerous hit on Derek Stepan.  The collision happened early in the third period, with the Rangers leading 2-0 at the Verizon Center. No penalty was assessed on the play.  Referees Chris Rooney and Justin St. Pierre called a tight game, but somehow they missed this one.  Brouwer should have at least been whistled for a two-minute interference penalty for the collision.   Stepan left the ice and headed directly to the locker room, based on NHL concussion policies: Stepan said he knew he was fine on...

Russian Junior Team Stops Playing to Protest Officiating

The Orenberg White Tigers of the MHL, a Russian junior league, were not pleased with the officiating in back-to-back games against Ak Bars.  In protest of two poorly-called games, the team simply stopped skating. From Puck Daddy’s Dmitri Chesnokov: “I had complaints about the referee after the first game,” [head coach Sergei Syurdyaev] told Sovietsky Sport. “For example, he gave out minor penalties to a player who dropped his gloves during a fight. But at a minimum this is a minor penalty plus a 10 minute misconduct! He may should have been kicked out of the game altogether! I tried to influence...

Local Refs Go Pink for Breast Cancer

It’s often said that the best referees are the ones you don’t notice.  Well, these guys are going to be hard not to notice, but at least it’s for a good cause. The Bluewater Referees Association , based in Ontario, have jumped on board for Breast Cancer Awareness month. All referees and linesmen will be donating a game’s pay to the Sarnia-Lambton Breast Cancer Association. The donation will be made prior to the start of a major midget AAA game between the Lambton Jr. Sting and the Windsor Spitfire on Sunday, October 20.  The game is free to attend, but donations will...
