Philadelphia Flyers winger Wayne Simmonds saw his afternoon come to an abrupt end on Saturday with the New York Rangers in town. After an exchange with Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh, Simmonds was hit with a match penalty for intent to injure.
Referees Kelly Sutherland and Dave Lewis immediately ejected Simmonds, handing him a match penalty for punching an unsuspecting opponent.
According to Rule 46.15:
A match penalty shall be assessed to a player who punches an unsuspecting opponent and causes an injury.
McDonagh was given four minutes in penalties – two for slashing Simmonds and another two for high sticking. Rangers forward Oscar Lindberg served the penalties, as McDonagh was injured on the punch from Simmonds. He did not return to the game.
Simmonds is automatically suspended until Commissioner Gary Bettman has reviewed the play.
Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol declined to comment on the match penalty to Simmonds, saying only that he was glad Simmonds was okay after taking a crosscheck to the head on the play.
Earlier this season, the Kings’ Milan Lucic was suspended for punching an unsuspecting opponent. Will Simmonds suffer the same penalty?
