It’s not easy being a linesman.

You’re always in the middle of things, whether it’s dropping the puck on a faceoff, manning the blueline during a zone entry, or jumping in to break up a fight. While performing your duties, you also have to watch out for sticks, pucks, and players. No matter how quick your reflexes or how well you’re positioned, once in a while, you’re going to get hit.

With the game tied at three and Vancouver shorthanded, linesman Derek Nansen found himself on the receiving end of a Canucks clearing attempt.

Nansen briefly dropped to one knee. He got back on his skated and took his usual spot on the boards near the blueline. The veteran official appeared to be in some pain as he leaned heavily on the Devils’ bench. He never left the ice, though, and never stopped manning the blueline.

Two minutes later, Nansen was breaking up a scrum behind the Vancouver net, with no signs of injury.
