Listening to the refs on the ice is always fun. We’re going way back – nearly 30 years – to check out long-time referee Andy Van Hellemond working a playoff game between the Chicago Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers.

“You didn’t want to talk to me?” Van Hellemond asks Blackhawks captain Darryl Sutter (0:50). “Alright. Don’t come around all night, then!”

There’s all kinds of excitement – Van Hellemond getting hit by the puck, estimating the time and hardware requirements to fix a broken pane of glass, and the legitimacy of hard hits.

“Don’t yap!” he admonishes Chicago’s Jerome Dupont (3:39). “I’m not yapping at you,” sad Dupont. “You’re yapping at him – that’s worse!”

Pretty cool to hear him argue with Gretzky over the thrown-stick-with-an-empty-net rule, too…
